A case of Identity part Two 1
Holmes sat in his chair and smoked his pipe.
“So, Holmes, it seems you saw things I did not.”
“You saw them, Dr.Watson, but you did not understand them.
For example, I know Mary is a typist because there are lines on her shirt sleeves near her wrists.
Her sleeves touch the table when she types.
Now, please read me the newspaper ad left by Mary.”

*ここは前回に説明したところ。
原文ではその後も説明をしている。
「手首のすぐ上の、タイピストがテーブルに強く押しつける部分に、二本の線がはっきりとついていた。手回しのミシンを使うときも同じような跡が残るが、その場合は左手の、しかも親指から一番遠い横の部分だけつくはずだ。あの娘のように幅広くつくはずはない。」（講談社青い鳥文庫「名探偵ホームズ・消えた花むこ」より）
ここでは手回しミシンとの違いを説明しているが、手回しミシンとは左の写真のようなもの。（ウィキペディアよりの引用）。写真にあるミシンは左側に（使う方からすれば右側に）手回しのハンドルが付いている。これを回して針を上下させている。写真のように左手で生地を押さえている。ホームズはこのことから「親指から一番遠い横の部分に跡が付く」と言っているのだろう。
それにしてもよく観察している。ここがホームズ物のおもしろさだろう。
“Hosmer Angel is 5 feet 7 inches, with white skin, black hair and a very thick mustache…”

“Enough. Now look at Mr.Angel’s letters to Mary.
What do you think is interesting?”
I looked at the letters and said,
“They are typed.”
“Yes, and he also typed his name.
Now, that tells me almost everthing.”
＊自分の署名までタイプで打っていることでホームズはこの事件の結末を推理する。
英文では自筆で署名をし、その下にタイプするのが決まりだそうだ。
Holmes wrote a letter to Mr.Windibank asking him to come see us.

１通はEnjoy Simple English にあるように継父のMr.Windibank に。
もう一通はAngel が働いていた言う会社へ。
＊この当時のロンドンの郵便が早いのに驚く。手紙を出した次の日に依頼した人物がやってくるのだから。
The next day a man about 30 years old entered Holmes’ room and sat down.
“Welcome Mr. Windibnak.
Thank you for sending me a reply. Did you type it?”
＊ホームズが出した手紙への返事がタイプで打たれてもうホームズの手元に届いている。
“Yes. And I’m sorry Mary caused you trouble.
I know you will not be able to find Mr.Hosmer Angel.” answered the man.
Holmes said quietly, “I can find him. Did you know, Mr Windibank, that each typewriter is different?”

Mr. Angel’s typewriter is unique in 16 ways.
For example, part of the letter “r” is missing.
And your typewriter is exactly the same.”

*Mr.Angel のタイプライターとMr.Windibank のタイプライターとが同じものだとホームズは推理する。それが意味するところは・・・。
タイプライターが商業的に生産され始めたのが１８７０年頃と言われている。
「消えた花むこ」（A Case of Identity）は１８９１年９月に作られている。作家コナン・ドイルは社会の変化や進歩をよく見ていたのだなあと思う。
