The Adventure of the Speckled Band -part two -1
“I’m glad you really came.” Helen greeted Holmes and me with a smile on her face.
*with a smile on her face;
“Of course. Show us the rooms.”
Helen’s room was small with a bed, a dressing table and a chair.
*dressing table; 化粧台
Holmes sat in the chair and looked around.
He suddenly stood up and pulled on a thick rope hanging down to the bed.

“Oh, that’s for calling the servants,” said Helen,
“But it’s broken.”
“Why does it come out of the air vent? And why is the vent connected to another room and not the outside?
*air vent; 通気孔
Helen’s stepfather’s room was larger.
“Helen, does your stepfather have a cat?
I see a small dish for milk.”
“We don’t have cats, only a cheeta and a baboon.”
“Ah, but this dish is too small for either of them.”
Suddenly, Homes said out loud,
“This is terrible. Helen, put a lantern in the window to signal us when your stepfather returns to his room tonight.
Then, leave the windows open so we can get in.
Finally, go to your old room quietly and stay there.
Watson and I will stay in your room to solve the mystery.”
Holmes and I waited for the signal in a nearby hotel.
I asked Holmes,
“So, what did you see that I didn’t ?”
“First, the air vent.
I knew there would be one before seeing the rooms.
Remember Helen’s sister said she smelled cigar smoke?
That meant there had to be something that connected the rooms.
（I knew there would be one before seeing the rooms. ）
Ah, and I see Helen’s signal.
Let us go.”
